7 things you wish you didn’t do at your staff party
With Christmas literally just around the corner, one major thought must be flowing through every employee’s mind right now, the much anticipated Christmas staff party. It’s that one time of the year where everyone can let loose, unwind and just leave any work related stress back where it belongs, in the office.
We all know the drill. Everyone’s in high spirits, conversation is flowing and so too are the drinks. However, you might just want to be that little extra wary about your semi-drunken actions, considering the awkwardness that might strike your office on the next working day. We’ve all been there before – The clock strikes 9:00 a.m, you’ve entered the office, heads are turning and daunting flashbacks of the night before suddenly take over. Boy oh boy, It surely ‘ain’t’ a pretty a sight. Here are the 7 things you wish you didn’t do at your staff party.
1. One tequila, two tequila, three tequila, FLOOR!
Go easy on the booze, amigo. We know it seems like good fun at the time but you’ll definitely regret it a few hours later. Christmas in Malta, as like any other feast on the island tends to stir a rather alcohol infused stretch which might not end too well, especially if you add some tequila to the equation.
2. Ask for a pay rise
Another incredibly bad decision is asking for a pay rise during your staff party. Geez, don’t even go there. Not even if you happen to be the most diligent, hard-working individual who’s ever graced your office premises, just don’t do it. There’s a time and place for negotiating your pay terms, and the Christmas staff party surely is not!
3. Discuss work all night
Leave any work related conversation behind. Seriously, it’s your Christmas staff party. Sit back, relax, bond with your colleagues and have a good a time. I mean, it’s Christmas after all, the most wonderful time of the year where everyone’s in high spirits. Leave it that way! No one wants to hear you moan on about how Ċetta from HR stole your parking space last Tuesday.
4. Drink one too many cocktails
Christmas in Malta wouldn’t be the same without that special festive cocktail to gulf down at your staff party. On the downside, we all know how we end up after one too many. The concise brew of different spirits combined in one glass could have some seriously, mind blowing effects. We’re not saying don’t take advantage of the open bar, but just keep in mind that these people do actually work with you.
5. Hit on your colleague
Whoever said don’t mix work with pleasure couldn’t have been more right. There are plenty of fish in the sea, please don’t go for the one’s who share the same office with you. Every staff party has it’s fair share of flirting, just make sure yours is clean and doesn’t go anywhere. Save yourself from the embarrassment of rejection. After all, you don’t want to spend the rest of your working days waiting for her to leave the kitchen so that you can make your morning coffee.
6. Even Worse – Hit on your boss’ partner
Don’t even think about it! As soon as the slightest thought crosses your mind, just stop, breathe and say to yourself, “ this person funds my life”.
7. Limit yourself to one dish
Rest assured, there’s going to be plenty of mouth-watering food at your staff party for all to enjoy. Christmas is one of the few times during the year, were you can eat all you want without feeling guilty. Embrace the festivities, try everything on the menu and have a jolly, good old day! Just be reasonable and don’t over do it, especially with the desserts. You know it’s Christmas in Malta when you wake up with a double chin and love handles that match.
